With Russell Wilson under contract,Authentic Tyler Kroft Jersey, why are the Seahawks scouting QBs?

The Seattle Seahawks are doing their homework on some of the top quarterback prospects in this year's draft class.

Earlier this month, general manager John Schneider was at Texas Tech's pro day where Patrick Mahomes II was working out. And according to NFL Network, the Seahawks hosted Cal's Davis Webb on Wednesday.

Schneider has admitted that need plays a role in the team's selections. Given that Russell Wilson is only 28 and under contract through 2019, why are the Seahawks using their time to scout quarterbacks?

There are a few factors to consider, and the first one is obvious. Every team wants to be ready in case a player they like slips further than expected.

"We go through the discipline of it to make sure because you never know when things happen and guys fall and something can turn up late in the draft process and all that," Pete Carroll said last season. "We have to be ready knowing we can get caught not doing our work. We do a full investigation in guys as much as we can to figure out what's happening."

Wilson is the only quarterback the Seahawks have drafted during the Carroll/Schneider era. But last year showed that they need to have a plan if he suffers an injury. If Seattle falls in love with a quarterback who ends up playing well in fill-in duty,Authentic Jake Fisher Jersey,Authentic Paul Dawson Jersey, there's always the possibility of trading him for significant value.

But the biggest reason probably has to do with the trade market. In 2014,Authentic Corey Coleman Jersey, the Seahawks traded the No. 32 overall pick to the Minnesota Vikings,Authentic Emmanuel Ogbah Jersey, who selected Teddy Bridgewater. Seattle moved down eight spots to No. 40 but also picked up a fourth-round pick.

Last year, Seattle traded down five spots from No. 26 to No. 31, picking up a third-round pick in the process.

This is more strategic than random. There is an advantage for teams to take quarterbacks at the end of the first round rather than the second because first-round picks come with a fifth-year team option. In other words, teams potentially get an extra year of control with the quarterback before they have to pay up.

It would be a big upset if the Seahawks drafted a quarterback in the first three rounds. They have too many other needs. But they want to have done their homework when they talk to other teams.

A big part of the draft is projecting what other organizations are going to do. The Seahawks want to have evaluations they trust. They want to know how the quarterbacks might fit into different schemes with different coaching staffs. They want to be armed with the necessary information when potentially negotiating a trade.

The Seahawks have not used their original first-round pick since 2011. And once again this year, they will likely be open to trading out of the No. 26 spot -- potentially to a team that needs a quarterback. That's a big reason why they continue to do their homework on Mahomes,Jake Fisher Jersey,Tyler Kroft Jersey,Paul Dawson Jersey ,Corey Coleman Jersey ,Emmanuel Ogbah Jersey, Webb and others.
